Come on ... support the Tukolene kids with your pledges and donations and motivate Butch and his team to reach their goal ... they'll need all the help they can get. - Terry

My name is John Robbins, I have been in the casino industry for more than 25 years and together with 3 friends from the Gaming industry, we have come up with an Annual Adventure Challenge that we hope the casino industry will support and also participate in. Something we can all look back on to make us feel proud.

  • The Charity: TUKOLENE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

  • The Objective:

To enable the Tukolene Youth Centre to purchase and develop a permanent structure. This will ensure that the Youth Centre will achieve and continue with it's objective of social upliftment of the street children of Dar-es Salaam.

TUKOLENE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
Tukolene means " We have held together"

Children form the Tukolene Youth Development Centre

CONCERN is an Irish based donor organization that have agreed to partner Tukolene in providing training and capacity building.

The Story so far…In 1997 14 young boys and girls, in an effort to find employment in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, started a small nursery under a tree. They voluntarily planted trees in poor areas in and around the city to instil environmental awareness in young children. When they offered their services to the New Africa Casino, KaiRo Ltd decided to get involved in social upliftment and identified Tukolene as the ideal starting point. They paid for the rental of the premises they required until the permanent structures are built. Mr John Robbins, Director of KaiRo Ltd, recognised that there was a need for the core group of 14 original members to have a future to look forward to and generously donated a 16-acre farm on the outskirts of Dar-es-Salaam. He has also donated sufficient funds to start the first phase of the building. Today, three years down the line, the centre services over 160 youths per day and has evolved as a centre for children to relax, study, have discussion groups and receive counselling. Without this initiative and additional funding all these children would be back on the streets. With aggressive fund raising the project should be sustainable within five years. Many organisations from various other African countries have visited the Tukolene Youth Centre and they all agree that the concept is ideal as a social upliftment initiative that can work in other countries as well.

The Challenge

  • The Kilimanjaro 2001 Challenge: To climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, East Africa departing 15 September and hopefully return 22 September 2001.

    Mount Kilimanjaro

    Standing 5895 metres
Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain in the world
The Trek will take us 6 days……

The average temperature at the foot of the mountain is 25-30C and on the summit it can range from Minus 10-20C.
Climbing to the "Roof of Africa" is physically and mentally demanding. As many as 40% of those who set out to climb Kilimanjaro turn back before they reach Uhuru Peak.

  • The Pledge:

Mount Kilimanjaro is 5895 metres high and each pledge is worth US $589.50 (10 cents per metre). Every pledge is entered into a unique Draw. The winner of the Draw, which will be drawn at the end of the current expedition, will then accompany the founding members on the 2002 Challenge which is an expedition down the Amazon River in Brazil, all expenses paid. The winner will nominate the charity of his or her choice and the event will also be named after the winner, (eg. Smith Amazon Challenge 2002).

The winner will then join the elite Founder members group which will enable him or her to do their bit for a good cause each year and by doing so conquer some of the world's greatest challenges.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL OUR SPONSORS

As the 2001 Challenge will be our inaugural event, a professional cameraman will capture the climb and our epic story for a documentary to be featured on Prime Television, so all our sponsors will receive valuable international TV exposure.

We know the people of the casino industry are generous and supportive and this is an opportunity to show we care and are prepared to give back to those worthy causes that need our help.

Thank you in advance for your support and we hope it's you who will be joining our 2002 Adventure down the mighty Amazon River in South America.
